Stealing time on the subway

Stole a few minutes to work on RunSnakeRun on the subway home from Linux Caffe this afternoon.  Normally I just keep working on whatever I was working on when I leave the caffe, but this project is a CGI system and I don't have the server locally... so instead of working on paying work I stole a few minutes to work on the GUI, basically started work on the "back" button.

I rather like the fact that, outside of rush hour, I can generally get a reasonable amount of work done on the subway in Toronto.  I wouldn't have ever tried it with Soni's laptop (which won't suspend properly), as I'd spend way too long getting ready to work to make it worthwhile, but with my laptop (which suspends as long as I don't use compiz) I find I can get about 25 billable minutes in during the trip from here to the caffe.  It's not enough time to really "program" (again, I need big blocks for that), but I can do basic time-sync tasks like testing, integrating patches, exploring some problem I've been trying to figure out, etceteras.

A laptop that doesn't suspend (and resume) doesn't deserve to be called a laptop...

What's the problem, by the way? I've rarely seen Compiz mentioned as a cuplrit for breaking *suspend*. What sort of video card does this thing have?

It's a Lenovo W500 with a Mobility Radeon HD 3650. With compiz enabled suspend just doesn't come back to a working desktop. I get a black non-responsive screen with no input, no chance to switch to text terminals, no way to kill the X server etc.

That said, while compiz is cool, it's not a must-have for the machine, working 3D graphics and suspend are what I need.
