The Prospector

‘There’s gold in them thar hills’
He presses forward another day
Each alluvial nugget yield
Compels him to incessantly further his way

Though he daily the waters will scour
He has but limited inclination for
The grains of downstream fragments
Which glisten upon the rivers floor

They offer him only the flavour
Of which they allude to lying ahead
That will put to rest the thoughts
Of such lesser enticing river bed

It’s towards the far off mountains
That he makes his arduous crawl
His voracious fevered answer
In pursuit of her ceaseless call

Sun-scorched, malnourished yet impervious
Nought he’d stumble across would deter
Should he fail - the ‘crazed megalomanic’
In success – ‘zealous entrepreneur’

He knows the mountains conceal within
A rich and lustrous seam
He has caught in their dawning glory
Her beckoning golden gleam

The day he steals upon her seclusion
She will the worth of her treasure convey
To transform worn weathered prospector
In a salubrious and resplendent display

Though tonight in the still of the moonlight
The distant wolf-howl streams
An orchestrated wild-wood movement
To the prospector's golden dreams
