Ebeneezer's Farewell

No my dear Mrs. Cratchett
I cannot stay to share your meal
Though it would warm my heart
To see you at last dine as you deserve
For though you might love me tonight
You could only love the man that I've become
You rightly cursed the man I was
While those people waiting there
Still had some love for the bitter man I was
They reached out their hand to me
Though each year I slapped it down
Perhaps some day I'll be a man
Such good people might endear
For tonight though I'll seek out
Those who loved me in the dark
Yet rest easy gentle lady as I go
I shall not lapse in this accord
I've tightly gripped the golden cord
