Have now patched the nvidia-kernel drivers with two different x86-64 patches that are supposed to fix various problems, yet no change in the symptom. Takes a very long time for the change-test-reboot cycle on this. Oh well, for now I still have to run with the (flickery, slow) vesa driver. Not pleasant... a few minutes and I start to feel like I'm getting a headache.
