Gentoo is not for the impatient (More than 12 hours to compile XFree86 and KDE)

Snaking.
Granted, my machine is old, but that's 12 hours! And that still leaves me needing Mozilla and OpenOffice, both of which are apparently huge installs (though I can use the machine to some extent while those are going on). Need to figure out how to get the binary packages working if this is going to be practical (though I do admit a certain satisfaction in the idea of having the whole system built from scratch).

There's a binary package for Openoffice (even on my newer machine i didn't want to wait) There may be a binary package for mozilla. There is one for firefox:<br />

Thanks, but the thing I was missing is that the binary packages are not being sourced from a web-site, but instead are coming from the packages CD. I'd skipped that part in the installation doc since I was doing a stage 1 install.
