That ol' Gentoo Magic (Two days later...)

I told Gentoo to rebuild the whole world a couple of days ago. It updated/built 293 packages, including all of KDE (3.5.2 now), most of the key services (mythtv and the like), firefox, thunderbird, the whole enchilada. It trundled away quietly in the background as I worked, as I played, as I slept, and then this morning it was finished. Reboot and the magic had granted me a new system with the latest and greatest of everything I care about compiled cleanly from source. Yay Gentoo!

So, when I do a "smart upgrade" on my boxen, the binaries are "dirtily compiled" or "not compiled from source"? I am just curious.

Most Linux distros are binary-based. That is, they normally install binary packages (RPMs, DEBs), potentially with the option for source compilations in special cases where the binaries aren't compiled with the options you want, or aren't compatible with the versions of the libraries you have. Gentoo defaults to building from source. Generally that means that everything winds up compiled against exactly what's in your environment... which makes for a fairly clean environment. You aren't dependent on what the binary packager had installed when they built the package.

I took "compiled cleanly" to mean that it compiled without errors. It is pretty sweet to be able to build from source, but to let someone else do all the grunt work of figuring out dependencies and configure flags. Just sit back and watch it compile, cleanly. Magically!<br />
