Perilous Reflection

What we need is not complex
Food, shelter, air and water
Life is simple and direct
Though red of tooth and claw

To feel out what we want however
Takes more than lifetime's span
Of deep thought, somber introspection
and that most perilous reflection

For those who do the most
To conquer this great puzzle
Seem at greatest risk
Of missing what they seek

So maybe on this summer's day
When gentle breezes tickle trees
I would be better courting ladies
Than scribbling poetry
