Explaining Complex Things

We went to the last Cafe Scientifique of the season in Toronto tonight.  Topic was a fairly generic "the future of medecine".  A bit disappointing in that the focus was all on the ultra-high-tech possibilities that might or might not show up.  That is, it was all about reactive medicine, rather than proactive.  Nothing substantive ...

Uncle Vanya

After work we went to the distillery district to see Uncle Vanya. It was enjoyable, though I found the motivations post-intermission were hard to empathize with... pre-intermission I was really identifying with the characters, they seemed human, dreaming of a better world, but trapped in the mire of the day-to-day.

We want to make the ...

As You Like It (Other weekend pleasantries...)

Soni and I went to the Distillery District to watch "As You Like It" on Saturday. We wound up running through the rain to just barely make the show. The last time we were 7 minutes late getting to the door. It takes about 50 minutes to get there if you aren't running, and we ...

Dad's Coming Up (Mid-week visit...)

We're heading to a lecture tomorrow about a new treatment for cancer involving preventing the growth of blood vessels via a suppressive drug. Dad's coming into town to attend, so hopefully we'll get some time to hang around and chat afterwards.

Happy Rosey (Yay!)

Just got the good news, my cute little sister has just passed her entrance exam for French as a Second Language (for elementary school teachers). This means she can take the whole suite of FSL courses required to become a full-fledged French teacher in Canadian schools. She's been working on her French for a couple ...

Unsatisfying Weekend (Neither restful nor productive...)

Wound up working most of the weekend, which was a bad thing, because I really needed to have a few days of down time. Oh well. Got some work done for a client, but not all that needed to get done. Spent 3 or 4 hours reviewing TurboGears and SQLAlchemy for another client project. Should ...

Booth Work (Long day's chatting into night...)

Spent the whole day in the OLPC booth today, didn't wind up seeing any talks at all (including the keynotes, though luckily that meant that I didn't wind up with a blood-pressure issue over the whole Py3K mess :) ).

After that needed some decompression. Had a pleasant dinner with Tony and Val. Took a ...

Formatting and Review for Tutorial Handout (Oh, and some paying work...)

Spent the bulk of yesterday on paying work, solid day of billables down at the Caffe. Nothing all that interesting, just some refactoring of a view, scripting a maintenance task, that kind of thing.

Then started working on the tutorial handout (due end of this week). Got about 1/3 through editing when Paul came in. ...

Distribute Newspapers to Commuters via Avahi (EBook readers as opportunistic downloaders on local-link...)

We've got E-book readers showing up now, Kindle, OLPC-XO (G1G1), and the like. We've also got fairly widespread laptops, sub-notebooks, iPhones and N800s. Most of them are going to have local-network (wifi) connectivity free. People are manually downloading media on these machines to consume it on the subway/bus as they commute to work. At the ...

Sucky things Suck (Enough with the suckage...)

No more posts today about things that suck.

I'm married to a wonderful woman. I have a whole new world of exciting opportunities opening out in front of me. I have a family full of good people. Every once in a while I get to pat a puppy or two. I get to hang out ...
