Off to Taipei in 2 weeks (Open Source and inexpensive laptops...)

SJ suggested that I attend a conference in Taipei, Taiwan, and the conference organizers have generously offered to sponsor my trip. Asus will be presenting their EEEpc and their plans for creating a developer program around the platform. We really need to make sure that we're not duplicating effort across the platforms, and that the software and content used when going into schools is compatible.
Using Open Source, we, an education-focused non-profit, and Asus, a for-profit laptop manufacturer, should be able to collaborate and make sure that the children are not locked into particular bubbles of innovation. As we move forward, we can hope that the specs we need for an educational laptop will become so common that we need only specify generation 2 and the manufacturers will each have half a dozen options available to choose from.
I'll be gone for 10 days total, with 3.5 days (or so) available for recovering from jet-lag, meetings with local OLPC-ers, and maybe a bit of touring around the city. If you've got a suggestion for someone I should be meeting, or something I should be seeing, in Taipei, let me know.

I'd like to say welcome to Taipei, Taiwan. I'm a member of a local community TOSSUG and also helping on l10n of XO. Unfortunately I'm now stationing at Geneva for my research work that can't join COSCUP. I believe that my ex-colleague, Ping Yeh, and my friend Andrew Lee as well as other OSS community members will guide you to meet people and enjoy the nice food in Taipei. :)

Ping is, indeed, helping me a great deal (he's the one who arranged for me to go to the conference). I don't believe I've had the pleasure of meeting Andrew yet.

Definitely take the time to get to the top of Taipei 101! Even though it's not the tallest building in the world anymore the view from up there is just gorgeous. While you're there I'd also suggest you go to "Page One", an outstanding book-shop in Taipei 101 (on the floor below where the elevators to the top are) where you'll find anything and everything.

In terms of eating I'd suggest you spend one evening at "China Pa", definitely one of the nicest restaurants I've seen. For a quick bite the food-malls in Taipei 101 and the Mitsukoshi tower are also well recommended. On the 44th or 45th floor of the Mitsukoshi tower there's also a nice all-you-can-eat buffet with a stunning view over the city!

With regards to culture the National Museum (I think that's what it's called) is also well worth a visit. The Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall is also a definite must-see.

Also reserve an hour (or three) to visit one of the computer markets, you'll definitely like them.

I'm sure you'll enjoy your time in Taipei! :-)

Cheers,
