Hacking doesn't cut it yet (CD-ROM is flaky)

The machine with the little switch hanging off it is basically all old hardware. Unfortunately, the CD-ROM seems to work only for the first 2 or 3 minutes that the machine is up, just enough to boot Knoppix 3.3, but not Knoppix 3.4, and just enough to start booting Gentoo (then it starts getting I/O bus errors).

Going to have to swap in another CD-ROM, but at the moment I don't have a spare (this one is actually from the old PII Shiva gave me) and I don't really have the budget to buy a new one (though I'd guess I can pick one up cheap at the used-computer-parts store near Tim's place)... probably wind up swapping in the CD-R from my machine while I build Gentoo and then put the half-dead one back in when Gentoo's up and running.

Anyway, for tonight it's going to run memtest86 and I'll deal with it tomorrow after work.
