Kubuntu Limping around the Corner

Have almost finished the replacement of Gentoo on the server/workstation with Kubuntu Intrepid.  Reasonably straightforward install.  Keyboard seems to have been mis-identified, so I don't have a down-arrow, end or home key until I reconfigure the keyboard for each login.  I've seen one crash that appeared to be the nVidia drivers not wanting to go into "overlay" mode to view a test movie.  Wound up fighting networkmanager for quite a while to try to get a static IP even when noone was logged in, eventually just ripped NM out and configured a static IP.

Need to get backups re-configured, but other than that and the keyboard issue, we seem to be finishing the race with just a single day of lost productivity.

Been there and done that, and don't want to ever sound rude but thats why I went out and bought a MBP, you seem them popping up everywhere at the FOSS conferences these days. Mind you, in the early days I didn't mind but now its a real issue having to go to herculean efforts to bring something back up--i'm over it, maybe that means i'm old?

Yeah, I considered a Mac, but then I'm not helping make the Linux desktop move forward. I'm willing to put up with a *reasonable* amount of crap if it will help the OS desktop move forward.

Well we develop for Linux but we develop on OS X as our development workstations because Linux is not quite there yet for the seamless equivalent experience.

But because we develop for Linux we still push Linux forward, just not a Linux desktop downloaded metric forward.

Granted you need to live in the muck if you are specifically working on Desktop for Linux and trying to make it better. Thats just not me so I opted to live in more peace and spend my time on my server application code.

Again just from someone that did put up with more than reasonable amount of crap for many years ;-)

I've gone whole hog with Ubuntu Intrepid (GNOME) on my work laptop (Thinkpad x300) without a dual-boot safety net. I find that when this (Linux) becomes your only environment, adoption happens much faster. We've had Ubuntu at home for four years now. No Windows there either.

All my work now happens on Ubuntu. Research, teaching, presentations, compiling, etc. Occasionally, I have to use Windows in a lab on campus, and I find myself a bit lost. Never thought I'd see this day!

As for MBP users at FOSS conferences, I typically pick on them (on slow afternoons) as not being up to snuff for the task at hand :-)
