Half finished, next half up tomorrow morning (Relocating to our own place)

Rosey is gone, nice new place up the road of her own. Just about to start packing the car with our stuff to move to our place. Have to tear down the furniture and the like still. Dad will be by with the trailer tomorrow morning. Finally got our Bell bill today so we can ...

New ISP for the new place (Rogers or DSL?)

Looking around for a high-speed ISP for the new place. We've been using Rogers for a while, and it's fine, but it does horrible things to Bittorrent (PITA when you're seeding an ISO) and has pretty pitiful upload bandwidth (I often see 2 or 3kb, which with a multi-gig upload...)

Thing is, the DSL providers ...

Don't forget to check a new firewall before you leave the house (Oops...)

As part of reconfiguring the network yesterday I swapped out the (ancient) router/firewall we've been using as our external firewall and replaced it with the Linksys WRTG (L) we've been using as a wireless-only bridge. (The old router/firewall will go with Rose).

That meant a new internal network configuration, new "virtual server" mappings for the ...

One more big item off the todo list (Brokers beginning to make sense...)

We have a new apartment at Yonge and Davisville (come the 28th). Just have to drop in and get the paperwork done on Monday. Other than moving we are pretty much finished the "big" items on the "family" todo list. Still a few big individual things for each of us, but we're basically ready to ...

Apartment hunting sucks... (Long day's wandering)

We decided to move to a new place a couple of months ago. Couldn't get anyone to show us a place to which to move until this month (they all wanted to concentrate on the start-of-this-month crowd). So, we've been apartment hunting. 5 working days spent so far.

We thought we were going to close ...

I'd forgotten how loud normal desktops are! (Rescue machine seems less a gift...)

We have a rescue machine here. Soni gave her (reasonably powerful) workstation to a family member in exchange for their tired old machine. It's a consumer-level Compaq, nothing special and I'm sure quite normal seeming to most people.

But it's driving me nuts! It's so loud and annoying!

As of having to replace the old ...

Need some Albanian language radio streams (Keep Soni's mom from being too bored...)

Spent the evening trying to entertain Soni's mom. We're still working on the language barrier there (and we already did quite a lot of that today), so I was looking for a few Albanian-language elements she could read/listen-to/watch during the down-time.

BBC Albania is okay, but the audio-streams don't work with RealPlayer 10 (on Linux, ...

Slow weekend for work (Life getting in the way...)

We spent Friday evening helping set up the video blogger's thing at Linux Caffe. Weren't able to hang around while they were actually shooting though, so we headed off to a wonderful Ethiopian restaurant (Nazareth) a few blocks from the Caffe. The menu is quite short, but the food is wonderful and reasonably ...

Back up (mostly) ($1200 and 18 working hours poorer)

I've got the server/workstation back up to limping shape. GRUB is corrupted in some weird way (doesn't show the menu, just a garble of text, but it chooses the first option in the list, so I actually get booted) and the HAL daemon hangs the whole machine if I let it run... other than that ...

Stupid messages from a BIOS (Computer replacement doesn't go well...)

The main server gave up the ghost this morning. Refused to boot due to the boot drive partition table being borked. Since we've known we had to replace it for ages decided to spend the day doing that.

Spent 4 or 5 hours researching motherboards, GPUs, CPUs, power supplies, cases, etceteras. Decided to go for ...
